ALGEBRA: 5-83 Tag and Recapture

Learning Target:  Students will apply their proportional understanding to solve an problem.

Watch and Learn how Tag and Recapture is done in the real world:

Your Job:

  1. Capture 15 tad poles (beans) from the pond (bag) and tag them with red marks
  2. Place all 15 tad poles back in the bag.
  3. Capture your first sample by dumping some tadpoles on to your desk.  Do not dump all of them.
From here can you set up a proportion to determine how many total tadpoles are in the pond?

You must perform six captures AFTER your initial tag.  Use a one of the measures of central tendencies to determine the total number of tadpoles in the pond.

AT NO TIME SHOULD YOU BE COUNTING ALL THE TADPOLES IN THE POND!
